How long does it take to get a black belt?
Because we specialize in private lessons, each student progresses at their own pace. The more a student chooses to train and practice, the quicker he/she will move through the system. On average, it takes 5-7 yrs to achieve the rank of black belt.
What is the difference between Tracy's Kenpo and American Kenpo?
The Tracy System of Kenpo is the complete Kenpo art, with roots in Japan. American Kenpo is a limited version of that original art. Ed Parker, the founder of American Kenpo, and the Tracy brothers (Al, Jim, and Will) all trained together in California studying the original Kenpo. Ed Parker went on to change the system he taught, removing a majority of the techniques, and renaming it to "American Kenpo". The Tracy brothers stayed loyal to the original art, and that is what the Al Tracy studios across the country still teach today. For more history, please visit our page titled "What is Kenpo".
Do I have to take private lessons?
No. We offer a rate plan for group classes only, for students interested in the kickboxing, fitness and conditioning aspects. However, students taking group classes only will not progress through the Kenpo system, or achieve any ranks.
What is a belt test, and do I have to do that?
A belt test usually occurs at your normal lesson time, in which you demonstrate all the self-defense techniques and basic strikes and blocks associated with that belt. Instructors will schedule a student to test only when he/she is ready, and have already proven a solid understanding of the requirements. The belt tests are only required if the student is interested in progressing through the Kenpo system and wants to achieve rank.
Do you teach any other martial arts?
We teach the Tracy System of Kenpo Karate in a complete program, capable of taking a beginner to advanced black belt. We also incorporate elements of other arts that can be useful in self-defense, such as the stick fighting found in the Filipino art of Kali.
Do you teach MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)?
We teach various kickboxing strikes and blocks; as well as some joint locks and immobilization tactics commonly seen in MMA and UFC matches. However, we do not focus on training for cage or ring fighting, where those skills are used as a sport. Our focus is always on meaningful self-defense, when personal safety is at stake and there are no rules.
Will I get injured doing karate?
All of our instructors are educated in physical training, including two certified personal trainers. Proper warm-up exercises and cool-down stretching are always included in group class workouts. We also adjust training exercises to accommodate any student with a pre-existing condition that limits his/her movement. We rarely have any injuries, however we have instructors certified as EMT's, and a fully-stocked emergency first aid bag.
Do you teach weapons?
Yes. We can teach various weapons to students interested, including sticks, knives and firearm awareness and safety. However, training with weapons is not a requirement. We also teach students how to use everyday items as weapons in a self-defense, emergency situation.
Do you teach ground fighting?
Yes. It is not a requirement, but self-defense situations are likely to occur on the ground and we teach various methods of managing and escaping ground attacks, including joint locks and body leverage control tactics.
How many group classes can I attend?
When you are taking private lessons, you can attend as many group classes as you want for free. There is no limit or additional charge.
Do you offer family rates?
Yes, there are several ways families can combine their training. First, all private lessons can accomodate up to 3 family members at no additional charge. Second, if one family member is taking private lessons, all other immediate family members are welcome to attend the group classes at no additional charge. Third, if one family member is taking private lessons, they have the option of scheduling a second "bonus" lesson at a flat rate.
I am nervous around others and often embarrassed. Will I feel that way at your studio?
No. We take great pride in our friendly and laid back atmosphere. We have all levels of martial arts and fitness-focused students, and require all instructors and students to grant the proper respect and consideration to everyone.
Will I have to spar/fight with other people?
No. Sparring with other students is not a requirement. However, we do offer special sparring training sessions for students interested in pursuing that aspect.
Do I have to be in shape to take Kenpo?
No. Kenpo is a self-defense system based on practical movements that anyone can learn. For students interested in the fitness side, Kenpo can be used to get you into shape -- you can start at your own pace and build your conditioning to your own timetable.
I have a belt in another art. Do I have to start over?
Yes. Each martial art has their own system of belts and colored ranks, so all students starting Tracy's Kenpo system at our school start at the beginning. Then, through our private lesson program, they will always advance at their own pace.
Would I need to buy any equipment?
There is no general equipment requirement, however students interested in kickboxing are strongly encouraged to purchase boxing gloves to protect their hands. If students are interested in sparring, some other protective gear is required like mouthpieces, shin pads, cup/jock, etc.
Will this style help me lose weight and develop stronger physique?
Absolutely. First, your training in your private lessons will be geared to your goals and priorities. Second, because we offer free, unlimited group classes students can workout mulitple times a week. Our group classes include various cardio and strength building activities. We strive to keep them different day to day, and week to week , offering well-rounded fitness and fun.
Can you help with discipline and confidence building?
Yes. As students develop the physical side of martial arts, they also inherently develop a more disciplined outlook. The Kenpo art is specifically designed for self-defense, and students learn how to handle physical attackers, which also inherently provides more confidence in their day to day activities.
Does karate promote fighting?
No. In fact, we believe it does exactly the opposite. Students trained in self-defense develop awareness skills that allow them to recognize dangerous situations before they occur, or before the student becomes vulnerable. Furthermore, students develop a self-esteem level that can be seen by others who may normally consider provocation, but are deterred by the student's confidence.
Do students have to wear uniforms? Is there a dress code?
All students are required to wear uniforms to their personal lessons and any special seminars. Students generally wear normal workout clothing to group classes (sweatpants, shorts, T-shirts). We do restrict suggestive clothing, and anything that promotes another martial arts school.
What are the age ranges of your students?
We have students in all ranges. Kenpo self-defense is a vital skill for all ages. Many senior citizens benefit from the increased confidence that assuages their concerns about being victimized; as well as the physical, health-related benefits.
Are group classes segregated by rank or experience?
No. All group classes are open to all students.
Are you prepared to work around disabilities?
Yes. We specialize in private lessons, and can design each student's training specific to their lives.
Do you break boards or bricks?
No. We train in practical self-defense situations and have not yet heard of any boards or bricks attacking people. As soon as we do, we will incorporate defenses against boards and bricks.
Do you participate in tournaments?
No. We train in practical self-defense situations. Our focus is always on our students' safety and security, not earning points in competitions or tournaments.
